Fiorentina, out from Champions League

Lyon continued their excellent group phase Champions League form with a 2-1 victory against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Lyon have now progressed past the group phase of the Champions League six years running and they appear to be one of the teams to avoid in the next round of matches. An engrossing game saw Fiorentina’s Adrian Mutu and Alberto Gilardino cause the Lyon defence, particularly Jean-Alain Boumsong, all sorts of problems. However it was the verve and vigour with which the French side counter-attacked that created most of the clear cut chances.

The Italians surged forward after the break with opportunities for Mutu and Riccardo Montolivo but they could not find the equaliser and it was Lyon who ended the game looking the more likely to score. Building on the midfield dominance of Toulalan and Makoun, the combination of Benzema, Keita, and Juninho were free to create havoc in the Italian team’s back line. Lyon are well and truly the giants of French football and judging by this performance they may well conquer Europe this year as well.
