Mutu and national team

Libertatea reported yesterday that the forward was furious with Romania coach Victor Piturca’s claims that the country would still have lost 3-0 to Lithuania at the weekend even with Mutu on the pitch.
The Fiorentina star was said to have been so offended that he had decided to hang up his international boots unless the Romanian FA brought in a new head coach.
Mutu has now issued a response in which he categorically rubbishes these claims.
“Honestly I was very surprised to read that I was angry with the coach and wanted to quit the national team,” the 29-year-old stated.
“I can guarantee that I have never said anything like that and I’m absolutely not thinking about it. I haven’t argued with Piturca.”
Mutu made his Tricolorii debut in 2000 and he has since scored 29 goals in 64 appearances.
News that he hasn’t retired will come as a welcome boost to Romania, who have made a shaky start to their World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign. Last night the country limped to a 1-0 win against minnows the Faroe Islands.
